The sea of Rapa Nui
I fell in love of the ocean in Rapa Nui. I’m not the best swimmer but living in Eastern Island (Rapa Nui) introduced me a whole new world under the sea. I was scared on my first time diving more than a meter down, my ears hurt a lot and I can’t hold the breath much… but I saw my friends diving and swimming 3 or 8 metres down in this beautiful ocean that I just felt the encourage to learn and do it as well.
Rapa Nui has the cleanest and beautiful waters to dive and swim around, with exotic fishes, friendly turtles (but careful that they bite! (but not so hard!)) and colourful coral fields.
My friends and I jumped from the volcanic rocks into the sea and had the best time exploring it.
Recommend:
– Ovahe beach and everywhere close to Hanga Roa town.
– Cover your mask with toothpaste then wash it with water. I will not get any fog in hours. (Get your mask and snorkel equip on the continent, on the island the prices are really expensive).
– Practice! Just take time and your body will get used to the deep and you will hold the breath longer and longer.
Careful with:
– Waves, as a Rapa Nui old fisherman warned me, they always come with 4 rows. Once I took too long to jump and I still have the scars on my leg of one big wave that smashed me against the rocks and then grabbed me into the sea to fell in a field full of hedgehogs… anyway… after that happened you aren’t afraid anymore.. you know the pain and the hedgehogs don’t hurt so bad. 😉
– Respect the turtles. Locals of Rapa Nui take care a lot of their nice companions, and they can get really mad if you bother the turtles by touching them.
